Embedded FinOps Becomes a Platform Requirement
Embedded FinOps is becoming a critical pillar of Platform Engineering 2.0. In episode four of The Platform Engineering Show, Alan Shimel and Pankaj Gupta of Broadcom discuss why cost awareness must move directly into the platform experience instead of remaining a separate reporting function.
Gupta explains that platform engineering started with a strong focus on developer productivity. That mission still matters, but the environment has changed. AI, agentic workflows, rising infrastructure costs and tighter IT budgets are forcing platform teams to rethink how financial accountability works.
Cloud Waste Requires Earlier Intervention
The conversation highlights the limits of bolt-on FinOps. Many organizations only pay attention after a large cloud bill arrives. By then, the decisions that created the spend have already happened. Embedded FinOps shifts the focus from after-the-fact visibility to real-time guidance during provisioning.
That means the platform should help users understand cost before they launch an environment. It should show the expected impact of public cloud, private cloud, spot pricing or other infrastructure choices. Embedded FinOps can make cost tradeoffs visible at the point where teams still have options.
AI Changes the Cost Equation
AI adds a new layer of complexity. Gupta points to rising hardware costs, memory pricing pressure, supply chain constraints and the shift from token maxing to token economics. These changes make cost governance more important for every CIO and platform team.
The challenge is not just infrastructure waste. AI workloads can introduce unpredictable demand, specialized compute needs and new consumption patterns. Platform teams need ways to attribute cost, guide behavior and help teams make better decisions without slowing delivery.
Every Platform User Becomes FinOps Aware
A key takeaway is that FinOps cannot remain the responsibility of a small central team. Developers, platform engineers, SREs, DevOps teams, data scientists and business leaders all influence spend. The platform must make that responsibility practical.
For enterprise leaders, Embedded FinOps connects platform engineering to business outcomes. Platform Engineering 2.0 will require cost-aware provisioning, real-time visibility and controls that help teams deliver software and AI initiatives within budget.
