I am pleased to announce the launch of PlatformEngineering.com as the newest site in the Techstrong family. As its name makes obvious, this site we hope will become an invaluable resource for the Platform Engineering community.
More than that though, not one of the Techstrong sites exists in a silo. No, at Techstrong we are about breaking down silos (see what I did there). As such PlatformEngineering.com will be a sister site to DevOps.com, Security Boulevard, Cloud Native Now, Techstrong AI, Techstrong ITSM, Digital CxO and, of course, it will share content with Techstrong TV.
It was 11 years ago this month, that I first started MediaOps, the company behind DevOps.com. Though we didn’t launch the DevOps.com site until March of 2014. Back then I knew that DevOps was on its way. I wasn’t sure if the market was ready for a site dedicated to DevOps, but felt like there was a lot to say about it, and if just turned out to be a blog, so be it. Well, as they say, the rest is history.
With each successive Techstrong site, we launched them either knowing or thinking it was highly likely that there was a strong enough community to support the main focus of the site. With Security Boulevard, cyber was already huge. We were way early with Container Journal, which was recently renamed Cloud Native Now. Same with Digital CxO and Techstrong AI; I felt we were very early.
With Platform Engineering, I waited for the movement and the community to find its legs. Maybe because much of the early noise was the “DevOps is dead, long live Platform Engineering” nonsense. I never bought into that and thought it was clickbait type of stuff. I watched as the movement became better defined, the community grew, and the viability and useability of PE matured.
I took a much more nuanced approach to my view around Platform Engineering. Over time my view on Platform Engineering has evolved. Today, I view the SDLC as a collection of different frameworks, disciplines and processes of which Platform Engineering plays a vital role. Agile, DevOps, DevSecOps, ITSM and even AI also play vital roles in bringing software and applications to market and keeping them well maintained and secured. Continuous testing, observability, GitOps and more are involved too.
To me all the above are parts and functions of the modern software factory. A factory that is about to undergo yet another “industrial revolution” with AI bringing disruptive change up and down the SDLC.
While a lot of Platform Engineering themed content is already up on DevOps.com and Cloud Native Now, going forward PlatformEngineering.com will be the home for the bulk of our Platform Engineering content.
As I did with DevOps.com and our other sites, I don’t intend this site to be for just one point of view. No, this is a big tent for the Platform Engineering community. Whether you think Cloud Native is an indispensable component of Platform Engineering, no matter what side of the open-source community you identify with, no matter what other Platform Engineering sites or communities you frequent, there is a place here for you at PlatformEngineering.com.
We invite you not only to consume the content here, but to contribute as well. If you have an article or point of view you want to express, write us at editor@platformengineering.com and have your voice heard.
Again, like our other Techstrong sites, you will be able to find Platform Engineering content, not only here but throughout our rich content offerings and webinars, in our Techstrong Learning events and on Techstrong TV, via our podcast channels and more.
We are committing to Platform Engineering. We think it has a vital role to play in allowing software to be developed faster and more safely, and be more scalable. We hope you will find this information valuable and interesting. But it takes a village or community to support a site like this. If you want to partner, contribute or sponsor, please reach out to us at the editor’s email above.
